It’s hard not to feel disappointed with Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced Edition. What was meant to be an improved version has failed to deliver. This next-gen release of one of the most beloved games of all time has become a cash grab for Rockstar. They have shown little regard for the quality players have come to expect. The experience has also not met expectations. The graphical improvements are lackluster. There is a glaring push for microtransactions. It’s clear that this “enhanced” edition was more about extracting money than enhancing the game itself.

A downgraded “Upgrade”

GTA 5 Legacy Edition Surpasses The Free Enhanced Upgrade in Steam Player Count
The most glaring issue with the Enhanced Edition is the almost non-existent improvements. The lighting, shadows, and reflections have had minor tweaks. Beyond these tweaks, the game feels unchanged. This is especially apparent when compared to the Legacy Edition. The graphical settings have been severely limited. Many players have found that the customization options to tailor the game’s performance to their system have been removed. This isn’t the enhancement we were hoping for. It is simply a way to make the game look slightly better. The necessary performance improvements that would justify an “enhanced” edition are missing.

The Push for Microtransactions
Rockstar’s true focus is clearly on in-game purchases. The heavy integration of GTA+ feels forced and, frankly, takes away from the experience. This is a blatant attempt to monetize the game further, offering more incentives for players to spend money beyond the initial purchase. Microtransactions are common in today’s gaming landscape. It’s hard not to feel like Rockstar’s priorities lie here, leaving performance and content in the dust.

Removing Content and Features
One of the most frustrating changes in GTA V: Enhanced Edition is the removal of features that were integral to the online experience. The lack of text chat in GTA: Online is especially troubling. Not everyone has a microphone. Many missions require precise communication between players. This is especially true for Heist, where things can go wrong without any type of communication to get the gig done right. Removing text chat makes it more difficult for those who don’t have voice chat capabilities. Consider the “Pacific Standard Job.” How can players coordinate without the ability to type messages to each other? This is almost as pathetic as the time BF 2042 didn’t have a scoreboard the entire game!

Additionally, Rockstar made it impossible to transfer characters or saves if you were ever given money in the game years ago. An issue that PC players have no power in whatsoever in a public game a hacker can slip you 5 million bucks without your consent making you part of the problem you never wanted to be in. For those who have played for a long time, it feels like a slap in the face to those who’ve been loyal to the game since its early days.

I remember times I played on the Xbox 360 when GTA was finally released. A hacker gave the entire lobby 10 million dollars. It was amazing. There was no need to worry about any ban or consequence since it was never your fault. You could share your money with others on your mobile phone in the game. This helped other players regardless if they were your friend or not. It created a positive community. Does anyone remember those great days??? This was wayyyy before shark cards (microtransactions) were a trend and everybody was having fun regardless. It now targets whales. They spend much money in real life to buy the next overpowered vehicle. They also buy expensive expansions that require a ridiculous amount of grind and hours if you play normally. Rockstar wants to squeeze every penny for the next flying robot bike that shoots an infinite amount of missiles.

The Good….?
There’s a small positive in all of this: for a limited time, it seems like modders, hackers, and cheaters are less prevalent in the Enhanced Edition. But honestly, that’s a minor consolation when compared to the other disappointments.

What This Means for GTA VI
If this is the direction Rockstar is taking with GTA V: Enhanced Edition, it leaves me with serious doubts about Grand Theft Auto VI. The heavy reliance on microtransactions is worrying. The removal of basic features like text chat adds to the concern. The lack of real enhancements paints a concerning picture for the future of the franchise. Rockstar has the potential to create something great. However, it’s hard to be hopeful. The focus seems to be on maximizing profits from their players. Providing a genuinely enhanced experience appears secondary.

For the sake of fans, I sincerely hope that Rockstar takes the feedback from GTA V: Enhanced Edition to heart. The legacy of Grand Theft Auto depends on it. No one wants the next installment of this beloved series to prioritize greed over quality. Let’s just hope they can get it right this time.
